Southern Ivy League Schools
The phrase ” Southern Ivy ” is a common colloquial phrase used to compare and contrast some of the Southern universities to the Ivy League Schools. The comparison is normally done based on social prestige and quality of education/academic quality.
Some of the schools considered to be Southern Ivy league Schools include:
1. The College of William and Mary
This school is a medium-sized public research institution that was founded back in 1693. It’s located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Most of the school’s enrollment comprises a 4-year undergraduate program and focuses mainly on sciences and arts.
2. Duke University
This is a non-public research university that was established in 1838 and is located in Durham, North Carolina. The school is organized into 9 graduate schools and 2 undergraduate schools where the undergraduate student body is made up of students from over 106 countries, plus all the 50 U.S. states. It has business, law and medical schools.
3. Emory University
Established in 1836, Emory University which is located in Atlanta Georgia has 2 undergraduate programs, 9 graduate programs and various professional schools such as theology, medicine, nursing, public health, law and business.
4. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
It’s located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was founded in 1795 and offers liberal arts undergraduate program with an option to further pursue a major in one of the professional schools
5. Rice University
Rice was founded in 1912, in Houston Texas and has undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs in arts, sciences and professional studies.

Was founded in 1873 in Nashville, Tennessee and offers both undergraduate and graduate programs with over 70 majors in medicine, nursing, law, engineering, arts, and sciences.

Founded in 1819 in Charlottesville, Virginia and offers various disciplines among them Philosophy and astronomy.
