Anyone considering an education after high school is likely to have heard about and pondered the benefits of an Ivy League education. The demand for an Ivy League education is at least partially based on the difficulty on achieving this dream. When considering the most effective education, many students may ask “How much of an edge do graduates of Ivy League schools have?”

Ivy League schools: what are they exactly?
The Ivy League is a group of eight schools that was formed in the 1940s for the sake of intercollegiate football. However, these eight schools have since gained much more notoriety for their quality of education and difficulty of admittance.

Ivy League Schools have a reputation as being exceptional.
Since their football days, the eight Ivy League schools have gained their exceptional reputations for by those who evaluate educational quality. Ivy League schools are also more highly sought by many when it comes to receiving the best education possible.

Ivy League Schools are reputed to choose only the best applicants.
Ivy League schools tend to have more exclusivity when it comes to admissions and acceptance. While most of them have very low acceptance rates per year, students who apply to these schools annually also tend to be of the highest quality.

Competition for positions in Ivy League schools is stringent.
Because of the fewer acceptances per year and the high quality of applicants, competition for those esteemed positions is fierce. Those who are accepted are thereafter often treated as having more credibility for their achievement.

Ivy League schools themselves provide the quality they expect from their students.
Just as the study positions at Ivy League schools are highly-sought and esteemed, so are the positions for teaching. As a result, the Ivy League schools do tend to provide some of the highest quality education resulting in a higher quality of graduates.

The quality of Ivy League education results in graduate benefits
When a student graduates from an Ivy League college, they do so taking with them a certain prestige and respect garnered from such an achievement. Ivy League graduates do indeed experience a tremendous edge against competitors from lesser schools on the job market which can be expressed both in rate of hire as well as wages.

Ivy League graduates enjoy higher wages
The quality of education that a student receives at an Ivy League school as well as the prestige that comes with that degree result in higher wages for the graduates in their careers. While educational substance is certainly at least in part responsible for the higher wages, the connections that one makes at Ivy League schools also contribute to higher wages as well as greater chances for employment.

When looking for an education that will guarantee a certain amount of clout as well as edge over competitors in the work force, knowing how much of an edge graduates of Ivy League schools have and seeking an Ivy League education can make all the difference in the future success one enjoys.

As we have been taught from an early age, education is vital to a successful career. But, how much does attending a specific school really matter? We would be lying if we said that those graduating from the Ivy Leagues don’t stand above their peers when it comes to job consideration. But, why is this?

Ivy League Schools

Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island)
Columbia University (New York City, New York)
Cornell University (Ithaca, New York)
Dartmouth College (Hanover, New Hampshire)
Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
Princeton University (Princeton, New Jersey)
University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut)

Exclusivity

One of the main reasons Ivy League graduates are put higher on the list of potential job seekers is that the schools are very exclusive. They don’t accept just anyone into their hallowed halls. Admission standards are very competitive and only a small percentage of applicants are accepted each year. Knowing that admission standards are very strict leads employers to believe that these are indeed the best of the best graduates each year.

How do I get in?

If your dream is to attend an Ivy League school, it is best that you start your preparations early. Simply earning good grades your last quarter of school will not get you accepted. You must have a tradition of good grades and involvement in school. Again, that doesn’t mean that your last year of school you run for student council. You must show a good track record of involvement in your school. Lastly, make sure you are well prepared for the SAT/ACT.

Summary

Unlike many schools, it will take a great deal of effort and preparation in order to be accepted into one of the Ivy League schools. However, with hard work and determination, you will likely succeed. Just remember to start prepping early in your high school career.

Columbia University in New York City is a research university and one of the oldest in the nation. While many people know about the university itself, which was founded in 1754, there are some facts that not many people know about Columbia.

Columbia University: Educational institution and land-holder.

Second only to the Catholic Church, Columbia University is next in line for owning the largest amount of land in New York City. Its 20 schools cover 32 acres.

Timing is everything; Orgo Night.

Organic chemistry exams are usually held on the first day of final exams and, as one can imagine, students usually spend a good deal of last-minute time making sure they study. The Columbia University Marching band takes this time to invade the Butler Library at midnight the night before and pester the studying students with music and jokes.

Because the band wasn’t enough…

Pressure can be intense during finals week at Columbia University. As if the band weren’t enough noise, every finals week Sunday, students open up their windows at midnight. At this time, they all let out primal screams as loud as they possibly can.

Columbia’s humble origin as a schoolhouse

Columbia University, one of the top research institutions in the U.S., had humble origins as a little schoolhouse in lower Manhattan. Classes began there in July of 1754, adjacent to the Trinity church. The founding class consisted of 8 members with Samuel Johnson presiding.

Columbia – the campus with two campuses.

Columbia actually has two campuses. The original resides in Morningside Heights and includes the historical neoclassical architecture of old. The campus was expanded to a second location in uptown Washington Heights for its Medical Center.

Columbia is a school rich in tradition and honor; knowing a little more about its history only serves to enrich the history and interest.

Most people realize that Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, is an American institution, an educational icon, and one of the oldest universities In the United States. However, aside from being one of the most renowned universities in the States, what is usually known as a dignified educational institution has had some quirky and unusual happenings around its campus over the years.

Bladderball

Bladderball was a tradition on the Yale campus between 1954 and 1982, revived again in 2009 and 2011. On the Saturday before Yale-Dartmouth games, a 6-foot inflatable ball is rolled through the campus with various teams fighting to possess it. In the 1960s, the bladderball actually left the confines of the campus onto the city streets (just out of reach of the police) to the house of Yale’s current president.

For good luck – rub a foot!

Tradition states that if a student rubs the foot of the statue of Theodore Dwight Woolsey, president of Yale from 1846 through 1871, they will have good luck. While the origins of this tradition are unknown, the toe on the statue is clearly quite worn and golden from years of students taking advantage of some possible good luck.

The Yale Daily is old news – really old news!

The Yale Daily is a paper printed 5 days a week for Yale University. Printing began on January 28, 1878 and has continued since. This paper is actually the oldest college daily newspaper still extant.

The first U.S. University for the last degree.

Yale University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences was the first school in the United States to ever award a Doctorate in Philosophy, the PhD. This even took place in 1861.

Don’t tell – it’s a secret!

Yale University is home to a renowned secret society, the Skull and Bones, nicknamed “Bones” with its members being haled as “Bonesmen”. There remains a great deal of mystery surrounding this society and its members, including how a secret society can remain so well known!

While Yale University remains a quite respectable and sought-after institution, some of its traditions betray that it can also be a fun and interesting one!

Public Ivy League schools, otherwise known as Public Ivy Schools, offer students Ivy League level educations at public school prices and availability. Public Ivy School lists offer students a chance to consider these schools as prospects when choosing a future educational institution.

What are Public Ivy Schools?

Public Ivy Schools are public schools whose educational quality has been deemed by certain industry reviewers to be equal to that of the private Ivy League schools. Unlike private schools, which rely upon private funding to operate, public schools are subsidized by the state within which they reside.

Why consider a Public Ivy School over a private one?

Tuition at private Ivy League schools can be as much as 10 times the amount of that of public, state-subsidized schools; for many, this tuition is simply unaffordable. Additionally, private Ivy League schools have very stringent requirements for acceptance and huge competition for each of the few spots available; public schools tend to be more accessible.

What are the advantages of a Public Ivy School when it comes to careers and wages?

Because of their exceptional quality of education and usually notable reputations, public Ivy League schools render their graduates much more attractive to other institutions as well as to employers. The more attractive the graduate, the more likely that they will not only be offered the better jobs but be able to pick and choose for the best jobs and wages.

Are there current listings of Public Ivy Schools?

The original listed Public Ivy League schools were 8, with 2 more being added at a later date. These 10 are as follows: College of William and Mary, University of Texas (Austin), University of Virginia. Miami University (Ohio), University of California, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), University of Vermont, University of Georgia, and University of Washington.

Given that they will be vying for top jobs in the future, it pays for students to do their research into the top schools today; researching schools in the Public Ivy Schools lists enable students to consider more accessible and affordable education options.

Given the notable difficulty of getting into private Ivy League Schools, many students alternately search for public school alternatives via Public Ivy League Schools. When researching a prospective institution, looking at the Public Ivy League Schools for 2011 can help a student pick a top-notch university.

What are Public Ivy League Schools?

Public Ivy League schools are public or government supported universities that offer an education comparable in quality to the private Ivy League schools. Public Ivy League schools are a more approachable in their admissions as well as their affordability.

Who determines which public schools are Ivy League worthy?

A select few public Ivy League Schools were originally deemed as such by Richard Moll, an expert in colleges, in 1985. More recent lists have been compiled by Howard and Matthew Greene since 2000, applicable to 2011.

Why choose a Public Ivy League school?

Public Ivy League schools offer the type of education one might get from a private Ivy League school but offer much less competition for admission than the private schools which have infamously low admission numbers. Public schools are also immensely more affordable than the private institutions, allowing a student to get the quality of education that might not be otherwise financially possible.

Public Ivy League schools value still translates into better salaries later.

Because the public Ivy League schools are so well respected, they will result in better quality jobs with higher wages than lesser schools. Furthermore, the quality of education is so great in these schools that skills and thus marketability are higher for their graduates.

Public Ivy League schools are located throughout the nation.

While the majority of private Ivy League schools tend to be situated in a specific region, the public Ivy League schools are located throughout the U.S. allowing greater accessibility for students around the nation. A public Ivy League school might even be located in the student’s own state.

There is no longer a need to aim for a private Ivy League school that might be impossible; considering one of the exceptional public Ivy League schools might enable a student to acquire as quality an education for much less expense.

Students who want the best careers often look towards the most respected universities in the country for their education. For some people unable to attend the private Ivy League schools, the “Public Ivies” provide a very worthy alternative.

What schools are Public Ivies?
The “Public Ivies” are 8 public, rather than private schools, that are considered the “Ivy League” type schools of the public school genre. These 8 schools were listed in 1985 by Richard Moll in his publication “Public Ivies: A Guide to America’s best public undergraduate colleges and universities” as being exceptional for public universities.

Why consider Public Ivies?
Private Ivy League schools are notably difficult to enter and are quite expensive. Public Ivies offer a little more reasonable alternative while providing exceptional educational value.

Public Ivies carry much weight when it comes to future careers.
Employers and other institutions both consider the Public Ivies as schools that are commendable with students who are exceptional. Graduates from these schools find that their resumes will have more heft than would graduates from lesser public schools.

Which are the original Public Ivies?
Moll’s originally listed Public Ivies were as follows: College of William and Mary, Miami University, University of California, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Texas at Austin, University of Vermont, and University of Virginia. Moll’s original publication also offered 9 runners-up as being worthy of mention.

Is there another more current list of Public Ivies?
Since 1985, another list of notable universities was compiled by Greenes’ Guides that comprised 30 schools with educations said to be comparable to those of the Ivy League schools. The listing was later revised by “The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Public Universities” in 2001 which also contained 30 notable schools that can provide any student with an exceptional education.

For the student seeking the best educations publically available, investigating the currently top ranted Public Ivies or comparable schools will help the student make the best possible choice towards forwarding their education and future careers.

Attending an Ivy League school is the ultimate dream for many students. Making that dream come true requires that students understand the admissions process for Ivy League schools so that their chances of acceptance are high.

What are the Ivy League schools and what is unique about admission into them?
The Ivy League is a group of 8 schools that have exceptional reputations among universities. As the acceptance rate is generally no greater than 18 percent and sometimes as low as 6 percent, the admissions process for these schools can be particularly important to a student who wishes to be accepted.

Why consider admission into an Ivy League school?
Attendance at an Ivy League school is an honor for which many students strive but few are chosen. Because of the high demand of these schools and their stringent acceptance process, having an education from an Ivy League school will grant the graduate with a certain prestige that will follow throughout his or her remaining educational or work career.

How do Ivy League schools affect future careers?
Because of the prestige associated with Ivy League schools, employers are historically more willing to hire their graduates for their top careers over other colleges. The quality of the education results in more likelihood of higher pay even at entry level positions.

How can a student boost their chances of admission to Ivy League schools?
Because of the fierce competition between applicants for the Ivy League schools, some students wisely choose to hire an admission strategist to help them present themselves in the most attractive way possible. Admissions strategists can consult with the student to form an admission strategy to have the advantage over other applicants.

An education is forever and the institution from which a student receives it will make a difference for the rest of that student’s life. Increasing chances for admission into Ivy League schools can also increase the chances that the resulting education and career will meet every expectation that the graduate can ever have.
