Brown University – 5 Fun Facts
Brown University is one of the elite Ivy League colleges. It is steeped in the tradition of academic excellence and social elitism that is known throughout the Ivy League. You may know all the statistics about the school, but listed below are 5 fun facts you may not be aware of.
1. Brown was established in 1764 to provide a different alternative for students. They wanted a Baptist protestant answer to the other Presbyterian, Episcopalian, and Congregationalist options with the other prestigious universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Not only did they provide that answer, they differed in the fact that they opened their doors to all students, regardless of their affiliation. They have since dropped their affiliation with the church.
2. Brown has the oldest undergraduate engineering program out of all of the Ivy League schools.
3. Originally named the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it changed names to the College of Rhode Island, and finally to Brown University in 1804. Tuition at that time was only $5.00.
4. The first chancellor of the university was John Hopkins who was the chief justice and governor of Rhode Island. He was also one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
5. Brown follows a “new curriculum” which gives students the right to direct their own education. They can take courses on a pass/fail basis and have the option of enrolling at Rhode Island School of Design to take some different electives they wouldn’t usually be offered.
