Choosing a college is a decision that plagues many high school students and their parents. It is a decision that is not to be taken lightly because it will have a great impact on the rest of your life. One college that is sure to be at the top of the list is Dartmouth.

Dartmouth is one of the eight elite Ivy League schools and is the smallest of the eight with an average enrollment of just 4,100. It was founded in 1769 by Reverend Eleazar Wheelock and is considered the nation’s ninth oldest school. The school is located in a rural area of New Hampshire. Therefore, it is considered a predominantly residential school.

In 2004, after two centuries of existence and overcoming struggles, the college was voted one of the world’s “most enduring institutions” by Booz Allen Hamilton. The school continues to evolve and continually improve to this day. It has the nation’s fourth oldest medical school, the very first graduate school of management in the world, and the nation’s first school of engineering.

Due to the rural location of the school, many students are involved in sports or clubs. There are over 200 student organizations, including the oldest collegiate outdoors club and the oldest university newspaper.

Dartmouth’s traditions run deep and wide. Students take great pride in their school and was noted in the Princeton Review as having the “happiest students”. So, if you are looking for a great school with stellar academics, look no further than Dartmouth.

Since our website is dedicated to the Ivy League Universities, we thought we’d take a break from our usual reviews and provide some interesting (and fun) facts about each university. We will start this series with Dartmouth College…

Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College was founded in 1769 and is one of the elite and prestigious Ivy League schools.

The university is located in Hanover, New Hampshire and is one of the nine colonial colleges founded before the American Revolution. If you are looking for a school that is steeped in academic tradition, look no further than Dartmouth College.

Dartmouth Facts

1. Dartmouth was designated as one of “The World’s Most Enduring Institutions” in 2004.

The school was noted for having a unique ability to reinvent itself over the years, like in 1893 when the university underwent major renovations to facilities, faculty, and the student body.

The student and faculty body doubled in size, and 23 new buildings were erected by 1909.

2. Among the university’s most notable alumni is Theodor Seuss Geisel, or as he is better known, Dr. Seuss. He wrote for Dartmouth’s humor magazine and was even editor in chief at one point. This is when he first started using his pseudonym “Seuss”.

3. Dartmouth College does not have an official mascot. Unofficially, the student body has accepted Keggy the Keg as their mascot. The figure is a spoof that parodies the stereotype of a beer drinking frat boy.

4. With an undergraduate enrollment of under 5,000, and a total student body of under 6,000, Dartmouth College is the smallest of the Ivy League schools.

5. Their motto when translated means “a voice crying out in the wilderness” or “a voice in the wilderness cries”.

As a young student in New England, I always wondered how to get into an Ivy League School As I got older and progressed into high school, I found some of our academic elite were also wondering the same thing. We all had good grades, participated in a number of extracurricular activities in and outside of school, and all had dreams of pursuing the best colleges possible. The students who made it into these schools jumped for joy when they received their acceptance letters, while others were totally crushed when they were denied or “wait listed”. If you’ve been wondering how to get into an ivy league school, here are some things to keep in mind.

Firstly, it’s important to know which schools are ivy league schools. After all, you can’t understand how to get into an ivy league school if you don’t know which schools they are. They include:

Brown University

Columbia University

Cornell University

Dartmouth College

Harvard University

Princeton University

University of Pennsylvania

Yale University

These schools are all private higher-education institutions, characterized by their academic excellence and selectivity in admissions.

There are many things to consider when looking into how to get into an ivy league school. One of the best pieces of advice that can be offered is starting your planning early. In most cases, students who are looking to get into an ivy league school later in their high school years without planning may not have as good of a chance as those who have started their planning earlier in their high school career.

Ivy league schools have very competitive admissions process, so the first thing you should do is decide if an ivy league school is truly right for you or your child. Ivy league schools can be expensive, and while financial aid can be generous (as many of these schools do have some very deep pockets), ivy league schools expect nothing less than 100% commitment to education from their students.

Once you decide that an ivy league school is right for you, optimizing your academic performance will be crucial. Do not be afraid to push yourself and do your best to excel in all of your courses. This includes basic academic classes as well as SATs and other academic tests. To best prepare for the SATs, consider purchasing an SAT prep book or taking an SAT prep course. Having the best grades possible will help in strengthening the college application when it is submitted to the admissions department for review.

Keeping you or your child active outside of school or after school hours will also be beneficial. If you are a parent, encourage your child to participate in outside activities at an early age. Community service, various organizations like Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, and music or sports lessons can help nurture your child to become a more well rounded student in the end. Having a full academic and social resume can help give a student a better chance of having the knowledge of how to get into an ivy league school.

Well-known colleges and universities are now offering quality online programs to cater to students who need to attend classes at a time and place convenient to them.

You can take, for example, Dartmouth College online classes. The college, located in New Hampshire, now offers a program it calls its Online Bridge Program. The school describes the Online Bridge Program as “a total immersion business education program.” Students accepted to Dartmouth College online classes are recent liberal arts graduates, PhDs, and what the college terms “other high-potential employees.”

The 25 condensed classes students in the Dartmouth College online program take are based around financial accounting, finance, marketing and managerial economics.

The Dartmouth College online classes give businesses a way to provide on-the-job intensive training to employees. To a company trying to attract top talent, participating in the Dartmouth College online program shows a commitment to employees’ continuing education while also targeting employees identified as future leaders of the company.

Because the courses are condensed and online, students can move through the classes at their own pace and on their own time schedule, which means less disruption to both work and family life.

So whether an employer or an employee, Dartmouth College online classes might be the next step in success.

What are Ivy League Schools?

In general, Ivy League Schools include only eight prestigious schools in the nation. The factors that these schools hold in common include specific policies and procedures, rigorous academic standards, impressive historical backgrounds and development, as well as membership in their elite athletic conference. However, each Ivy League School differs in its specific educational focus, location, size and general demographics of its campus, and size of its particular undergraduate student population.

Which schools are Ivy League Schools?

The eight Ivy League schools will each be covered in detail in this blog – however, if you are interested in knowing which schools qualify as a renowned Ivy League School, here they are:

• Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island
• Columbia University /Columbia College in New York, New York
• Cornell University in Ithaca, New York
• Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire
• Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts
• Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey
• University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
• Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut

What is so special about the Best Ivy League Schools?

These eight Ivy League Schools, all on the east coast, are among the earliest educational institutions founded, between the years of 1636 and 1865. A New York Herald Tribune sports writer by the name of Stanley Woodward actually coined the term “Ivy League” in the 1930s.

Two factors define Ivy League Schools:

Elite football conference, originally formed in 1956

Privileged American higher education

Over the years, attendance at one of these prestigious Ivy League Schools has transformed from being strictly an upper class privilege to a middle class opportunity. However, those who wish to attend an Ivy League School should keep in mind that the Ivies still maintain sky-high acceptance requirements; one of the Ivies routinely rejects as many as 90% of prospective students, including over half of students who have perfect SAT scores.

Another factor to consider is that Ivy League schools are expensive to attend; however, with the expense come the benefits. An Ivy League student can be eligible for competitive graduate programs, as well as esteemed awards such as the Rhodes Scholarship. A prestigious Ivy League degree is sure to attract prospective employers.
